Setting Intentions

“The more aware of your intentions and your experiences you become, the more you will be able to connect the two, and the more you will be able to create the experiences of your life consciously. This is the development of mastery. It is the creation of authentic power.” - Gary Zukav

The New Year brings the opportunity to press a reset button. Resolutions, goals, plans and intentions – our early January days are weighty with the hope of self-improvement. This feeling of hope for change is something we all need, the full stop of a year, a punctuation point at which to pause, stop and write the first sentences of a new chapter.

But while the gym or workplace often takes the focus when it comes to setting new intentions for self-improvement, how about starting with something, literally, a little closer to home?

“Taking time to stop and think about how you want to live in and feel in your home is an incredibly powerful thing to do. Being intentional with your design and decorating choices can ensure alignment with this.,” says Interior Designer Lesleigh Groos.

“A great place to start is to stop and ask yourself how you want to feel in each room,” adds Lesleigh. “It can be as simple as deciding that you want your office space to feel clear and focused. This could then mean removing clutter, or any objects that contradict this intention and then adding decor to assist with organisation that also ties in with the desired style or theme of the room.”

And one of the best things about setting intentions for your home is that you don’t have to wait until you’ve got a big budget for change, or ‘the time is right’. Progress, not perfection, is a perfect goal.

“Do you want to have more money? More time to do the things you love? Live a more intentional life? Decluttering might not necessarily seem like the answer, but it really can save you time and money, and help on the path to that intentional life. A clutter free life is an intentional life,” says Shelina Jokhiya, founder of Dubai business DeCluttrME.

Home is where the heart is

Our home is supposed to be a sanctuary, a place of peace, rest and safety. But, if you’re struggling to find things, or stressed about mess, clutter, or simply cannot find a peaceful spot to sit, it’s time to make an intention for your interior!

If you’ve become overwhelmed by clutter and don’t know where to start, hiring the services of a professional can be the ideal solution. They’ll walk you through your walk-in wardrobe, offering a fresh pair of eyes on what you’re holding onto unnecessarily. Out with the old, in with the new.

“Decluttering and organising your stuff, means that you should be able to find things quickly and easily (or as I like to say … in less than 5 seconds) moving forward.  You will spend less time cleaning up, organising and caring for your space, and more time with your loved ones, doing activities and things that are important to you,” adds Shelina.

Spaces in your home should only bring positive emotions and reactions. If they aren’t, stop and ask yourself ‘why?’. Is the room a reflection of a version of you that has outgrown the space? Are you using a corner of your home to subconsciously store things you’re avoiding? Is there a space that you could rearrange to make you feel more excited about coming home?

Health isn’t just for the gym
Sleep, is a cornerstone of good health and wellness, so starting with your bedroom – eliminating distractions, screens and promoting comfort through good quality bedding, is a great way to start an intention to live more healthily.  Some people swear by introducing crystals, adhering to rules of Feng Shui, or even cleansing energy by burning sage or playing a sound on gongs. We say, open the windows – let natural light and air into your home. Ensure your air conditioning is well maintained and serviced.

Take a breath and look around your home. Is it the foundation you need to make 2023 a year defined by the intentions you are setting?

With 2023 unfurling its pages like a brand new book, it’s time to write a fresh new chapter, and setting intentions for how you wish that chapter to look and feel is the first step – the intention sets the direction and tone for everything that follows.
