Step 1: Define your style

The first step towards identifying your interior design personality is to define your style. Do you prefer classic and elegant designs or are you drawn to modern and minimalist aesthetics? Are you more of a maximalist who loves the bold colours of the Burj Al Arab, or do you prefer a neutral and serene ambiance such as the understated Italian luxury inside the Armani Hotel at the Burj Khalifa? Take some time to browse through interior design magazines and websites to get a sense of the styles that appeal to you.

Step 2: Look for inspiration

Once you have defined your style, it's time to look for inspiration. Take a walk through your favorite Dubai neighborhoods and observe the architecture and design of the homes around you. Visit art galleries and museums to immerse yourself in different aesthetics and colour palettes. Browse through social media platforms like Instagram and Pinterest to discover the work of interior designers and decorators whose styles resonate with you.

Step 3: Choose your colour palette

Now that you have defined your style and found inspiration, it's time to choose your colour palette. Colour is a powerful tool in interior design and can set the mood and ambiance of a space. Consider the colours that you are drawn to and how they make you feel. Do you prefer soft, muted hues or bold, vibrant shades? Do you want to create a monochromatic scheme or incorporate contrasting colours? Once you have chosen your colour palette, you can begin to select furnishings and accessories that complement it.

Step 4: Mix and match textures

A luxurious and sophisticated interior design is all about textures. Experiment with different textures to add depth and interest to your space. Mix and match soft fabrics like velvet and silk with rougher textures like wood and metal. Incorporate rugs, throw pillows, and drapes to add warmth and coziness to your space.

Home is where the heart is

Our home is supposed to be a sanctuary, a place of peace, rest and safety. But, if you’re struggling to find things, or stressed about mess, clutter, or simply cannot find a peaceful spot to sit, it’s time to make an intention for your interior!

If you’ve become overwhelmed by clutter and don’t know where to start, hiring the services of a professional can be the ideal solution. They’ll walk you through your walk-in wardrobe, offering a fresh pair of eyes on what you’re holding onto unnecessarily. Out with the old, in with the new.

“Decluttering and organising your stuff, means that you should be able to find things quickly and easily (or as I like to say … in less than 5 seconds) moving forward.  You will spend less time cleaning up, organising and caring for your space, and more time with your loved ones, doing activities and things that are important to you,” adds Shelina.

Spaces in your home should only bring positive emotions and reactions. If they aren’t, stop and ask yourself ‘why?’. Is the room a reflection of a version of you that has outgrown the space? Are you using a corner of your home to subconsciously store things you’re avoiding? Is there a space that you could rearrange to make you feel more excited about coming home?

Step 5: Layer your lighting

Lighting is a crucial element in interior design and can transform the ambiance of a space. Layer your lighting by incorporating multiple sources of light, such as overhead fixtures, floor lamps, and table lamps. Use dimmer switches to control the intensity of the light and create different moods in your space.

Step 6: Personalize your space

Finally, to truly extend your interior design personality throughout your home, personalize your space with meaningful items that reflect your personality and style. Display artwork and photographs that inspire you, incorporate family heirlooms and souvenirs from your travels, and showcase your favorite books and magazines. These personal touches will make your space feel unique and truly yours.
