Playful Spaces: How to Create the Perfect Space for Your Child’s Bedroom 2

Encouraging creativity and play in children takes extra effort in an age where the lure of the smartphone or screen is all encompassing.  From ensuring that there is ample space for books to marking out an area where children can happily make a mess – even amidst the opulence of the typical luxury Dubai home or apartment – is crucial to ensuring your Dubai house becomes a Dubai home for your children, too.

Generous room sizes in most Dubai apartments or villas mean that the potential for making a child’s playroom their dream space is amplified. And if like many residents of Dubai, you are leasing the property you live in from a landlord, fear not. You don’t need to start playing around with shell and core to create the perfect play space. Here are our tips for transforming a bedroom into an epicentre of learning through play.

1.   Invest in furniture that will grow as they grow
Key pieces such a good-quality bed with storage, decent shelves and a desk are investments that will go the distance as your small family member matures from tot to teen. Their interests will likely change faster than you can keep up, so reflect these in affordable updates such as cushions, the toys and games and perhaps even bedding and curtains, or a lightshade.

2.   Choose the right rug
Children are messy and things will get spilled, dropped and trodden in. Save your budget when it comes to rugs and prioritise a floor covering that will go the distance – washable rugs are your friend, vinyl floor covering will allow your to wipe away a multitude of mishaps and a colourful pattered floor covering will bring a cheery accent to nursery, playroom or teen bedroom.

3.   Lamps, lights and more
From bedside table lamps to soothing night lights and bright overheads, a child’s room should incorporate an array of light sources to match their mood. Dimmer switches are ideal for when you’re encouraging sleep-resisting little ones to close their eyes, while of course the night light is such a perennial favourite that it’s even seen in five-star hotels these days. The ability to control the level of light in the room is essential, thanks to Dubai’s bright city lights at night and sunshine during the day. Which leads neatly into…

1.   Window coverings
Blackout blinds or curtains are one of the essentials that many new parents make a priority in their child’s bedroom and with good reason, as many small children and babies are sensitive to light. With the bright lights of Dubai at night and year-round sunshine, investing in a good set of well-made curtains or blinds is a must – not to mention these being an all-important finishing touch that makes a room feel welcoming and cosy.

2.   Smart storage
If you’ve ever stepped on an abandoned piece of Lego, you’ll understand what a good idea it is to have ample storage.  Beds with built-in drawers are a good option for keeping larger items safely out from underfoot, while you can encourage your children to be responsible about cleaning up their toys with easy to access felt boxes, wicker baskets, toy chests or trays that slide in and out of a rail. Smaller items that will invariably end up in a pick and mix are well catered for with boxes that can be labeled on the front. Many leased Dubai homes and apartments come with built-in wardrobes which are a great option for space-saving.

3.   Artwork
Whether you’re framing little Picasso’s latest kindergarten masterpiece or investing in a cute print, being in a rented Dubai apartment or villa doesn’t mean you can’t put the personal stamp on your space. Clever hanging solutions that create minimal damage to the walls and can be easily rectified upon vacating the property are a good option – you don’t need to drill into the wall, and you can infuse your little one’s space with inspiring artwork to fuel their little imaginations. Best of all, when they grow, it’s easy to swap out one print for another. Bye bye Paw Patrol and hello Star Wars.
