Rolex Tower. Did You Know?

Rolex Tower in Dubai is a building with a connection to the famous watch brand, but also so much more…

In a city full of impressive architectural icons, Rolex Tower can lay claim to being the only one named after an equally iconic watch brand. A building that perfectly encapsulates the ambitious vision of the city in which it stands, Rolex Tower is also a towering testament to the quest for enduring quality, beauty, luxury and prestige that is a pillar of the Seddiqi Properties business vision.

Hundreds of thousands of people pass the building on Sheikh Zayed Road each day – those that stop to admire its 60-storey glass façade may notice some of its ingenious architectural details, but there is also plenty to discover about the building beyond the regal glass-fronted structure.

Did you know…

1.     The high-performance glass façade of Rolex Tower extends from the base of the 235-metre tall building to its pinnacle capped with a clear glass beacon. The glass used is patterned green glass that is opaque at ground level and becomes more transluncent near the top of the building.

2.     Inside the grand lobby is a stainless-steel sculpture by artist James Clar. The 7-metre sculpture represents the actual sound waveform of a voice saying ‘Rolex Tower”

3.       The elevators inside the Rolex Tower go up and down at an impressive 18 kms/hour, making them one of the fastest elevator systems in Dubai.

4.     Why is the building called Rolex Tower? It was named in honour of the watch brand that helped to establish Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons as the region’s leading luxury watch retailer. The family first became a distributor for Rolex watches back in the 1950s, opening a boutique in Bur Dubai.

6.     Did you know that Rolex Tower was designed by the same company that also designed another Dubai landmark, Burj Khalifa? Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) Architects are behind both masterpieces.

7.     40,000 is the number of metres of aluminum used in the build of Rolex Tower.

8.     With its shimmering glass façade, the building is designed to evoke the idea of a desert mirage.

9.     The land for Rolex Tower was originally purchased by Seddiqi Properties in 2005, when some of the only notable architectural icons in the area were the Trade Centre and Emirates Towers.
